Welcome to Silk Road Ensemble's official web site. We hope that you enjoy this cultural and musical journey. The long, wide band of land from Turkey to China brought wealth and knowledge in both directions. For centuries after Marco Polo, the trade made Central Asia the main point of contact between West and East and created a unique and influential arts scene still flourishing today.

“Bayram” is a Turkic word for celebration. On Saturday, August 1, we invite you to join us in celebrating the music and cultures of the Silk Road, the historical route that connected East and West. The 17th Annual Silk Road Bayram is a showcase of the arts of this famous route traveled since 200 BC.

Marco Polo was one of the better known historical figures to enjoy the treasures of the peoples living along its course. But now Bloomington, Indiana has become a portal that connects us to the traditions and the fine arts of this ancient route that have contributed very much to our global community.

The schedule of events includes handcrafts displays, musical performances, dance, fashion show and lectures. Each visual art and performance spotlights important aspects of life along the Silk Road.

Thanks to the generous support of the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center of Indiana University (IAUNRC), all events are free and open to the public. This half day-long educational program is also made possible by the support of numerous Indiana University departments, the community cultural organizations and businesses.

Guests from outside Bloomington are kindly requested to visit www.visitbloomington.com to learn more about accommodations and related information. Campus maps may be found at www.iub.edu/visit.

Please check with the Silk Road Ensemble website (www.silkroadensemble.com) for further information. We look forward to welcoming you at the 2009 Silk Road Bayram in beautiful downtown of Bloomington, Indiana.
