Podcast: A Concert of Azerbaijani Classical Music

Aida Huseynova - Piano

Aida Huseynova, Ph.D., teaches Z111-Introduction to Music Theory for the Music in General Studies Department at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Her books, articles and multimedia projects have been published in Azerbaijan, USA, Germany, France, Netherlands, and Russia. Her repertoire as a pianist includes pieces of Central Asian and Western music with special focus on the music of Azerbaijan. Dr. Huseynova is the author of the educational DVDs “Music and Culture of Azerbaijan” and coauthor of “Music and Culture of Kyrgyzstan” produced with the support of the Indiana University Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center. She has presented lectures in many campuses in the United States and Europe, including Indiana, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Ohio State, Northwestern, Purdue Universities, University of Chicago and Wisconsin-Madison, Dartmouth College as well as at Cambridge and York Universities in the United Kingdom. Dr.Huseynova’s awards include Fulbright Fellowship (2007-08) and a fellowship from the Junior Faculty Development Program (2001-02).

Since 2007, Dr. Huseynova has served as a research advisor and interpreter for the Silk Road Project under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma. She has toured with the Silk Road Ensemble throughout the US, as well as in Canada, France and Qatar, giving pre-concert talks and participating in workshops. On June 9, 2009, she was the consultant for the live broadcast from the concert of Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at the Lincoln Center. In March 2010, Aida Huseynova was a part of the residence of Alim Qasimov, the prominent mugham singer from Azerbaijan, at Dartmouth College and Brandeis University organized by the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia.

In 2005, Dr. Huseynova was a member of the Advisors’ Committee at the Sixth Annual San Francisco World Music Festival. In 2006, she was a “musicologist-in-residence” at the International Festival and Symposium of Contemporary music “Icebreaker III: The Caucasus” in Seattle.

Aida Huseynova is the member of the Composers Union of Azerbaijan and Central Eurasian Studies Society, U.S.A., Secretary General of the National Music Committee of Azerbaijan.
